Eleven riot policemen in Thailand are under investigation after a photograph of them gambling at the job has surfaced.

The officers in question are shown within the photo decked out of their official police gear and playing a dice gambling game inside a central authority building that they were supposedly tasked with protecting.

The list of suspects includes eight officers of the rank of senior sergeant major, a sergeant major, a sub-lieutenant and a captain, all of whom belong to the Metropolitan Police 5th Division. They're still at the job (hopefully not gambling) while the investigation is pending.

Anti-government protests are frequent in Thailand with riot police regularly assigned to key buildings and intersections; most protests are peaceful so presumably riot police have some spare time on their hands, with a minimum of a couple of resorting to gambling at dice to pass the time.

The commander of the Metropolitan Police commented that he'd prefer there be no investigation and that the officers in question be instantly fired for loss of discipline and setting a foul example.

Gambling at dice, poker, sportsbetting, and other games is quite common and popular in Thailand even supposing it's technically illegal within the country. The one legal gambling options in Thailand are the lottery and betting on horse races -- although gamblers can only bet on races that occur within the country and cannot place legal bets on any horse races outside of Thailand.
