Former baseball wife (and low poker player) Anna Benson recently spoke with Dr. Phil about her arrest for showing up at her estranged husband's house with a gun, hatchet, and bullet-proof vest.
Benson was famous back within the mid-2000s for her outlandish and provocative behavior while married to MLB pitcher Kris Benson, doing absolutely anything to insert herself into the limelight -- including posing nude for Penthouse and trying her hand on the $10,000 buy-in World Series of Poker Main Event where she claimed the name of the game to ger poker face was "Botox!"
She parlayed her brief moment of fame right into a spot at the reality TV series Baseball Wives but her career arc was very similar to her husband Kris', who saw his baseball career splutter out in 2010.
She and Kris were separated in 2012 when Kris filed for divorce, prompting a late night visit from Anna who was armed with a gun, hatchet, knife, ammo belt, baton, and a taser, with a bullet-proof vest on for safe measure. Kris managed to sneak clear of her with enough time to name police, who apprehended Anna with no struggle.
At the time she claimed she had the entire gear after visiting a gun show and that: "My plan is to drive across the Southeast to different gun shows and notice what's available in the market and what's cool. The issue is that I HAVEN'T GOT any money to begin my business, and many the stuff I CANNOT tell the investors about as it is top-secret military and Department of Defense stuff."
In early November 2013 Anna was finally sentenced for her crime, avoiding any more jail time and getting 15 years probation and order to finish an in-patient psychiatric program and follow-up care.
Her interview with Dr. Phil was her first because the sentencing and he or she largely stuck to the similar story, seeking to laugh off the incident and claimed that "...the gun was in my purse. My vest was on me, but I had all this other black on, so that you couldn't really even see it. It looked more or less cute, like Angelina Jolie."
